I wish every city, town and village had a Matthew.
He is the perfect host, guide and companion to get to know Hue with, and besides that just a genuinely honest, friendly guy!
I only had two nights in Hue, and I really wanted to immerse myself properly in the history of the place having done a lot of wandering somewhat aimlessly around temples and historic sites in other parts of Vietnam, so I booked Matthew's Imperial City tour for my first morning there. Since I was fortunate enough to be the only one booked that morning, Matthew offered to pick me up direct from my hotel in central Hue and drive me to the Imperial City gate where we were supposed to meet. He was really chilled and good-natured about doing this (and in catering to every other question or little request I put to him throughout the morning), making it seem like the most natural thing in the world; more like a friend or family member I was visiting than a guy busy running a business!
Once the tour got going, Matthew's specialist knowledge really came into play, not only effortlessly reeling off names of historical figures and dates (he speaks perfect English), but also weaving in more mundane details to ground the stories of these many lofty characters in their more relatable human experiences. Matthew's passion for the subject is also obvious, making his enthusiasm in relating all this very infectious. He was also never rattled when I asked him to repeat something I'd missed or put it in a wider historical/regional context - his response was always quick and considered. At the same time, he was happy to ease up on the history whenever I changed the subject while walking between sites - chatting about his family, hobbies, and life in Hue in general - so that I also ended up learning more from him about contemporary Vietnam than I got from most of my other interactions with local people during my short trip.
A HUGE plus for me was how much of a foodie Matthew is, and we quickly bonded over our shared love for food/eating as a lens on real local life while travelling. I confess, this was an ulterior motive for me when booking his tour, as I had seen excellent reviews of his Hue food tour but my own restrictive itinerary prevented me from taking it...Suffice to say, his extensive knowledge really comes through on this front, too (he was a professional chef for some years), but more than that he shows a pure and genuine love for the individuals and families behind the small local businesses that make the real, home-style Hue cuisine. This resonates massively with my own approach to food, and we quickly bonded over our shared belief in food/eating as a way to relate to the local community, whether travelling or at home. I had actually taken another food tour just after I arrived in Hue the night before, and this was fine, covering all the obvious local favourites, but the three meals I had (breakfast, lunch AND dinner) on my second and last day in Hue, all on Matthew's recommendation, were each more of a fascinating, satisfying and delicious experience than most of the meals I'd had during my entire prior week in Vietnam.
So, all of that just to say: if you get the chance to take his food tour as well, do it! It will undoubtedly surpass your expectations, especially if you're really looking to learn how to 'eat like a local', while also covering some new ground in venturing outside the city to more rural environs.
I'll just add that I'd seen he also does a Hue city/tombs tour, which I'd definitely have done following on from and as a complement to his Imperial City tour if I'd had more time in Hue. I see now that he also offers a cycling tour out of the city on Airbnb, which I'd be fascinated to take for more of his insider perspective on rural local life.
In short, whatever your interests are while staying in Hue, Matthew is the ideal guide.
